San Fermin

San Fermin is a worldwide known festival in Pamplona (Spain). The most famous aspect of the festival is the Running of the Bulls (Encierro in Spanish). San Fermin festival became so famous thanks to Ernest Hemingway who after several visits wrote the book The Sun Also Rises.

San Fermin starts each 6th of July at 12:00 with the Chupinazo and it finishes the midnight of the 14th of July (the night from the 14th to the 15th) with a big meeting in the Town Hall square where everybody bring candles and sings “Pobre de Mi” (Poor Me) to take off their neckerchiefs until next year . Those red neckchiefs represents the execution of Saint Fermin (co-patron of Pamplona) who was decapitated, so the neckchiefs represents the blood on his neck after his head was cut off.

The Running of the Bulls consists in hundreds of people running in front of six brave bulls and 5 meek bulls for 825 meters (from the corral in Santo Domingo to the bullring). It takes place at 8 am from the 7th to the 14th of July. Before the bulls are released, the runners sing three times a song asking San Fermin to protect them.
