A powder used to pull a penetrating dye out of a defect in a part being inspected by the dye-penetrant inspection method. The part is soaked in the penetrant. Then, all the penetrant is washed from its surface and the surface is covered with the developer. The developer pulls any penetrant that has seeped into a defect to the surface where it shows up as a visible mark.
Industry:Aviation
A power distribution point in an aircraft electrical system. Bus bars are usually strips of metal to which generator or battery power is connected and from which circuit breakers pick up this power and carry it to the appropriate circuits within the aircraft.
Industry:Aviation
A power riveting tool used to install solid aluminum alloy rivets in a sheet metal structure. The squeeze riveter can be made in the form of a C-clamp or an alligator clamp. One jaw of either type clamp is a fixed part of the riveter frame, and the other jaw is moved against the fixed jaw by the piston in an air cylinder. The fixed jaw is fitted with a rivet set that fits the manufactured head of the rivet, and the movable jaw is flat. Shims are placed under the rivet set so the jaws come close enough together to form a shop head of the correct thickness. Squeeze riveting is fast, and rivets are more uniform than those driven by a rivet hammer and bucking bar.
Industry:Aviation
A power tool consisting of a rotating disk covered with an abrasive material. The part to be sanded, or abraded, is held against the disk, and the abrasive wears it away.
Industry:Aviation
A power tool used for drilling holes in metal or wood. The drill press consists of a motor-driven spindle on which is mounted a drill chuck that holds a twist drill. The material to be drilled is placed on a steel table under the spindle, and the spindle is forced down, causing the drill to cut into the material.
Industry:Aviation
A power tool using an electric motor to drive an abrasive wheel. Grinders are used to sharpen tools and to grind away or shape metal parts.
Industry:Aviation
A power-driven tool used to install and remove nuts, bolts, and screws. The torque delivered to the fastener by an impact wrench is in a series of sharp blows or impacts.
Industry:Aviation
A powered saw that uses a thin, circular blade driven by an electric motor. In a table saw, the blade is mounted on an arbor, and only a portion of the blade sticks up above the surface of the table. In a radial-arm saw, the blade is mounted on the shaft of an electric motor which is suspended on an arm above the work. The saw is pulled across the work. A circular saw blade may also be mounted on a hand-held electric motor and used as a hand saw.
Industry:Aviation
A power-operated saw used for cutting various thicknesses of metal sheet. The metal is cut with a small-diameter circular saw blade mounted in the head of this hand-held tool.
Industry:Aviation
A powerplant instrument used on multiengine aircraft to detect and display the difference in rotational speed of the various engines. One popular type of synchroscope has a small propeller on the face of the instrument. The propeller rotates at a speed and in a direction determined by the difference in RPM of the master engine and the other engine. When the propeller on the instrument face is not rotating, the two engines are turning at exactly the same speed.
