Company Profile:
Sometimes referred to as “Big Blue” IBM is a multinational corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York. It manufactures computer hardware and software and provides information technology and services.
(1) A root-segment database that resides in virtual storage. The data in an MSDB is stored in segments. Each segment can be available to all terminals or assigned to a specific terminal; however, segments cannot be assigned to a terminal that is defined through ETO. See also Fast Path.
(2) In IMS, a root-segment database that resides in main storage and that can be accessed to a field level.
Industry:Software
(1) A family or assortment of characters of a given size and style, for example, 9-point Bodoni modern.
(2) A particular type style (for example, Bodoni or Times Roman) that contains definitions of character sets, marker sets, and pattern sets.
Industry:Software
(1) A router that informs end nodes of the existence and identity of other routers. The selection of the designated router is based upon the router with the highest priority. When several routers share the highest priority, the router with the highest station address is selected.
(2) In a multiaccess OSPF network that has at least two attached routers, a router that is responsible for generating link-state advertisements (LSAs) for the entire multiaccess network and determines which routers should become adjacent. A designated router is elected by other routers using the Hello Protocol. See also backup designated router.
Industry:Software
(1) A feature of the i5/OS operating system that allows a user to connect multiple System i systems by using SPD bus, high-speed link (HSL) loop, or virtual interpartition technologies.
(2) A System i system area network (SAN) that allows high-speed links between systems in a System i cluster. OptiConnect provides three hardware technologies (SPD OptiConnect, high-speed link (HSL) OptiConnect, and virtual OptiConnect) that can exist simultaneously on a single cluster node.
Industry:Software
(1) A row for a SELECT statement of a cursor that no longer has a corresponding row in the base table because the row was updated. An update hole is created when a row in the base table is updated such that the row no longer qualifies to be in the result set while a cursor is open whose SELECT statement result contains the row that is updated. Such a row is no longer accessible though the cursor. See also delete hole.
(2) The location on which a cursor is positioned when a row in a result table is fetched again and the new values no longer satisfy the search condition. See also delete hole.
Industry:Software
(1) A feature that can be connected to a system to provide additional storage and processing capacity.
(2) A feature that contains I/O hardware such as cards, tapes, and disk units. The system may have multiple expansion units. An expansion unit can be bolted directly to the side of a system and is contained within the system covers. An expansion unit can also be mounted on top of a rack and has its own covers. Internal signal cables interconnect the expansion unit to the system or rack.
(3) A machine type or feature that can be connected to a system unit to provide additional storage and processing capacity. This expansion unit may contain I/O hardware such as cards, tapes, and disk drives.
Industry:Software
(1) A rule that limits the values that can be inserted, deleted, or updated in a table. See also check constraint, primary key, referential constraint, unique constraint, unique key, foreign key, informational constraint.
(2) A place in the system where contention for a resource is affecting performance.
(3) See threshold.
(4) A semantic condition or restriction. Certain constraints are predefined in the UML, others may be user defined. Constraints are one of three extensibility mechanisms in UML. See also tagged value, comment.
(5) A limit to set controls on the start and finish dates on task elements of the project, such as start-no-earlier-than or finish-no-later-than.
(6) In lexical analysis, a morphotactics rule that accurately processes compound words using dictionaries of word formation elements.

hub
(1) A fibre channel device that connects nodes into a logical loop by using a physical star topology. See also fabric.
(2) A customer-facing store that enables partners or clients.
(3) A half-duplex device that sums all of its input and then broadcasts that sum on all output to the connected adapters. A hub has a large collision domain and shared media.
Industry:Software
(1) A running component that can be running in parallel with other instances of the same component.
(2) A UML model element that represents an actual entity in a system.
Industry:Software
(1) A Fibre Channel topology that provides the underlying structure to interconnect multiple nodes and provides the necessary switching functions to support communication among multiple nodes. See also arbitrated loop, point-to-point.
(2) The physical or logical mapping of the location of networking components or nodes within a network. Common network topologies include bus, ring, star, and tree.
