Sophie is a simple girl with a passion for her job, who at only 18 years old runs her father's defunct hat shop, passing her whole day between work and home. While going to the bakery to see her younger sister, Lettie, she is pestered by two police officers, who are in the city because of the imminent war. She is saved by an attractive boy, the mysterious sorcerer Howl, who immediately develops a fondness for the girl. Returning to the shop, Sophie receives a visit from the Witch of the Waste, because of the attention she has been receiving from Howl: the witch has been long researching Howl's heart so that she may have it all of herself. She puts a curse on the girl, transforming her into an elderly woman and preventing her from revealing the truth about her own condition. Terrified by her new appearance and fearing the reaction of her relatives, Sophie runs away...
Sophie è una ragazza semplice, appassionata del suo lavoro, che a soli 18 anni gestisce il negozio di cappelli del padre defunto, passando così l'intera giornata tra il negozio e la casa.
