To reduce the strength of an X-ray or electron beam. Filters and foils diminish their respective X-ray and electron beams by directing the beam through a metal disk that is thicker in the center than at the edges; this action attenuates the center of the beam more than the edges, and thus "flattens" or equalizes the area of the beam.
