The Falkirk Wheel
A large boat elevator in Falkirk, Scotland, that lifts boats 79 feet (24 meters) into the air in order to connect the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union canal. Once lifted, boats must then enter two locks in order to descend to the correct height and continue their journey.
The wheel itself cost £17.5 million ($27 million) to construct, of which a large amount came from National Lottery funds. It was opened on the 24th May 2002 by Queen Elizabeth II as one of the events commemorating her golden jubilee.
